NAPWA conference comes to Cleveland in August

by Laureen Tews Harbert

Cleveland-From August 23 through August 26, Cleveland will play host to Staying Alive 2007, the annual conference of the National Association of People with AIDS.

Now in its tenth year, Staying Alive is the only national conference in the United States run by, and specifically for, people living with HIV and AIDS. Staying Alive offers an opportunity to share experiences, learn upto-date treatment strategies, enhance their leadership skills, build networks of peer support and explore advocacy strategies. A local planning committee with more than

40 members has been working to ensure the success of the conference.

The conference theme is "Quality in Action," and the program will include content on HIV clinical trials, HIV and hepatitis co-infection, women and HIV, substance abuse and mental health, public policy, and Ian HIV Positive Youth Institute.

Having the conference in Cleveland presents a unique opportunity for Ohioans to attend a national conference without the expense of out-of-state travel. While NAPWA has a limited number of partial scholarships, we encourage health care institutions, corporations, community-based organizations, congregations, and others to consider sponsoring a client or community member to attend the conference.

"It is a great honor for the city of Cleveland and the state of Ohio to be the host of this national conference," said Gary Richardson, who serves on NAPWA's board of directors and as co-chair of the Cleveland planning committee. "I am so proud and humbled by the outpouring of support from all the community partners at the local and state level, both from the public and private sector, who have come to the table to ensure the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS are being addressed at this conference."

For more information about conference registration, se NAPWA's website at www.napwa.org or call 240-247-0880. To

be in touch with the local planning committee, contact Laureen Tews Harbert at 216781-2944 ext 413 or Itharbert@ Community Solutions.com.

Laureen Tews Harbert is the program director of the AIDS Funding Collaborative and Cleveland co-chair of the planning committee for the Staying Alive conference.
